Australia is “a surveillance society” and the decision by NSW Health to not take advantage of CCTV footage to track COVID-19 cases for privacy reason fails to take seriously the gravity of the situation, Sky News contributor Catherine McGregor says.
More than 20 venues, where infected COVID patrons spent time in the past week, have offered NSW Health CCTV footage for tracing investigators. Ms McGregor said CCTV cameras are used by a range of private businesses and government organisations across a range of public places.
Sky News contributor Nicholas Reece said “I’m sure there is a civil libertarian debate that could be run here, saying that sharing that footage is a bad thing”.
“But this is a pandemic and we need to use whatever interventions and whatever technology is available to us to shut it down”.
